Google announced that it would provide HTTPS sites with a minor ranking bump as an incentive to switch over, effectively punishing sites that did not switch over by giving an advantage to rivals that did.

What Is HTTP?

HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol.  It allows communication between different systems in the most basic way. It is most commonly used to transfer data to a browser from a web server so that users can view web pages. It is a protocol that has been used for most of the early websites.

What Is HTTPS?

HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. The problem with the regular HTTP protocol is that there is no encryption of information flowing from server to browser, which means that it can be easily stolen. HTTPS protocols remedy this by using a SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate that helps create a secure encrypted connection between the server and the browser, thereby protecting potentially sensitive information from being stolen as it is transferred between the server and the browser.

Main Difference Between HTTP and HTTPS

The SSL certificate is the major difference between the two protocols. In fact, HTTPS is basically an HTTP protocol with additional security. However, this additional security can be extremely important, especially for websites that take sensitive data from their users, such as credit card and password information.

How does HTTPS work? The SSL certificate encrypts the information provided to the website by customers, which essentially converts the data into a code.Even if somebody tries to steal the information communicated between the sender and the receiver, because of this encryption, they would not be able to comprehend it.

If you visit a website or web page and look at the web browser address, it is likely to start with "http:/"
This implies that the website uses the periodic unsecured language to speak to your browser. In other words, somebody can "eavesdrop" on the discussion with the Website about your computer. If you fill in a website form, somebody may see the data you are sending to that site.
That's why you never enter your credit card number on a website called "http:/!" But if the web address starts with "https:/," that implies that your computer speaks to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on.

Look for the domain extension when checking the name of any website (e.g. ".com" or ".org," ".co.in," ".net" etc). The name just before this is the Website's domain name. Eg: "http:/amazon.diwali-festivals.com" in the above case, "diwali-festivals" (and NOT "amazon") is the word before".com." So, this webpage doesn't belong to "amazon.com," but belongs to "diwali-festivals.com," which we all haven't heard of before. You can check for bank fraud likewise.

Before logging into your e-banking, make sure that your bank's name is just before ".com.". Eg: "something. icicibank.com" belongs to icici; but, "icicibank. some1else.com" belongs to "some1else."
